Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR)

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve helps to lower the car’s exhaust emissions by recirculating some of the gas coming out of the engine and putting in back into the intake manifold where the engine re-burns it.

Exhaust gases cool as they pass through the valve helping to avoid overheating and premature wear and tear, extending the life of the engine.

When an EGR valve becomes clogged the engine performance can be affected causing rough idling, valve knocking and reduced performance and fuel efficiency.

A vehicle with a faulty EGR valve will fail its MOT

A clogged EGR that sticks open will lead to a vacuum leak which in turn causes inefficient combustion, hesitation,
rough idling and even stalling.
An open EGR valve causes exhaust emissions to flood the combustion
chamber and prevents it from
 functioning as it should.

A clogged EGR that sticks closed
causes nitrogen oxide emissions to rise and the engine to start to knock. A sharp knock occurs when the fuel in the combustion chamber ignites before the explosion in the cylinder reaches it.
