The DPF is made from a complex honeycomb ceramic structure designed to trap and filter
carbon particles coming out of the exhaust.
As the exhaust gases pass through the filter the carbon is caught on the honeycomb walls and stopped from passing out through the
exhaust and polluting the air.
Like any filter, this must be cleaned to avoid it becoming clogged up and stopping it from working.
When a vehicle's DPF filter warning light comes on it indicates that the filter is becoming clogged and will require cleaning either by -
Regeneration on a motorway journey (nominal expense)
Carbon cleaning (low cost)
or by taking it to a garage to be manually cleaned or possibly replaced
(possibly very expensive)
Note - Once a DPF warning light comes on, more often than not a vehicle will fail to perform a complete automatic regeneration and continued operation may damage the filter. If the filter becomes too full of carbon it will be beyond regeneration and will need to be replaced. A DPF that reaches 90% or approx. 45 grams full will be beyond regeneration.
Depending on your vehicle make and model a failed Diesel Particulate Filter can cost upwards of £1000 to replace.

Vehicles fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) at manufacture that are identified during an MOT inspection to have had the DPF removed or disabled will now fail the vehicle MOT
Vehicles will normally perform this whilst they are being driven, however modern driving styles often mean that the
vehicle does not get the chance
to perform this, resulting in the filter becoming clogged and beyond
easily being fixed.
Large diesel vehicles and cars used
for short trips on low speeds
produce more carbon and do not
often reach the conditions required
to start an automatic regeneration
of the DPF.
